Since 1999, the Financial Times (FT) publication conducted in-depth study to rank the top business schools in the world according to their MBA or business programs offered. As the years went by and as the team got smarter, new parameters were identified and introduced, while the old, irrelevant parameters were removed from their ranking methodology. 2010 will be their 12th year of ranking publication.
The Financial Times is a British based newspaper and is a specialist in the dissemination of international and financial news. FT is a fierce competitor for New York based rival The Wall Street Journal. It has been in existence for well over a century, and is the only paper in the United Kingdom that provides full daily reports on the London Stock Exchange and world markets.
MBA is a key academic program often searched by the discerning students wanting to gain the most in terms of business knowledge, teaching and exposure in business related field. Hence, getting admission into a school that offers the so-called top or prestigious would be imperative. The FT business school ranking, hence, plays an important part in their quest to find the best schools.
All schools listed in the ranking offer programs accredited by the relevant accreditation bodies such as AACBS (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), Equis or Amba, and own MBA program that has been running for a min 4 years.
The ranking is done based on data collected from two major sources – alumni and the respective business schools. To assess the effectiveness of schooling towards career progression and salary increment, graduates surveyed were those who completed their MBA in their school after three years.
Three main areas are subsequently analyzed. They are: alumni salary & career development, diversity and international reach, and finally the research capability of each business school. And within these 3 areas, 20 criteria were studied in details.
Following is the list of 30 top business (MBA) schools for the year 2010 (take note that the list rank the business school according to the genera MBA program. There are also lists tailored to specific business programs e.g. finance, international business, accounting etc; we will cover that separately):

As the table indicates, the London Business School (LBS) maintains its superiority as the top business school offering prestigious MBA programs for its students. If last year the school shared the top position with the Wharton of Pennsylvania University, this year it is the sole winner, displacing the latter to second spot.
The Salary refers to the average alumni salary three years after the graduation. While useful to prospective MBA candidates, the figures are however not being used in in the ranking.
Also, LBS has been showing some remarkable improvement since the inaugural business school ranking more than a decade ago. In the ranking usually dominated by the business schools in the US, LBS started at a modest 8th position, and slowly yet surely, the school kept on climbing up the table until it reached second spot in 2008. And in 2009, LBS completed its world domination, breaking the domination of business schools from the United States in the process.
Business schools from Europe and Asia have also shown encouraging movement, and soon, before you know it, people won’t be looking up too much on US-based MBA schools. That is most probable. If there’s any consolation, students who graduated from the top business schools in the US tend to receive bigger salary increase compared to others.
