The newly-appointed Attorney-General (A-G) must explain to Malaysians why the renamed special task force will not be investigating the controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and its related companies, the DAP said today.
"Despite all the outright false assurances given by Datuk Paul Low, who is a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, the Najib administration clearly believes that the shenanigans in 1MDB cannot see the light of day," he said in a statement today.
"Malaysians deserves the right to know why the investigations on 1MDB and its related companies, which were carried out by the task force, were stopped." Yesterday, the AGC, in a statement, said that it was keeping a special task force investigating money-related crimes under a new name but it will not handle investigations into the debt-laden 1MDB. The AGC said the National Revenue Recovery Enforcement Team (NRRET) is a rebranded version of the previous task force that was first formed in 2011.
"NRRET is not a new task force but is a rebranding of the previous special task force that has been in existence since 2011. NRRET is not in any way involved with any investigations involving 1MDB and its related companies," it said. Pua, who is also DAP national publicity secretary, said that because the task force has ceased investigating 1MDB, the culprits involved in the scams that led to its billions in debt would not be brought to justice. "Those who were involved in the direct transfer of US$1.2 billion from 1MDB to Good Star Limited, a company controlled by Low Taek Jho will never be charged. The culprits behind the money laundering scam to mask US$260 million of 1MDB funds as foreign investment into Malaysia to acquire former Sarawak chief minister, Tun Taib Mahmud’s UBG Bhd will never be held accountable. "1MDB executives who falsified documents and accounts to Bank Negara, banks and other authorities will never be punished for their crimes. Those who overpaid for 1MDB’s power plant acquisitions in exchange for monetary contributions into the prime minister’s private company masked as corporate social responsibility will never be brought to book. "The 1MDB bailout which started this year amounting to billions of ringgit of tax-payers’ money and commitment, caused by billions of ringgit of losses will hence be able to continue unabated and unchallenged," he said. This was despite assurances by Paul Low, whom Pua said had denied there were attempts to hamper efforts by the special task force to carry out its investigations. According to the DAP lawmaker, Low had said that: "Uncovering the truth with regard to the various allegations directed at 1MDB is of utmost importance both in the interest of the government and the nation as a whole.” The special task force, whose members included the AGC, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the police, had repeatedly insisted that the probe would be carried out in a transparent and independent manner and had urged Malaysians to trust and have confidence in them. "The failure to explain its inexplicable decision to stop all investigations into 1MDB will render the new A-G a complete puppet of the prime minister, who is also the finance minister and 1MDB Advisory Board chairman. "His complicity in covering the single largest financial scandal in the country will also make him the worst and most irresponsible A-G in the history of Malaysia less than two months into his term," Pua added. The high-level government task force was disbanded following the sacking of former A-G Tan Sri Gani Patail on July 27 and replaced with Federal Court judge Tan Sri Mohamad Apandi Ali. It was reported that the MACC, the police and BNM were ordered to work independently on the probe. – August 26, 2015
